Quantitative Methods

In general, the data are of two types, namely Quantitative and Qualitative data. Qualitative data is a categorical measurement showed in terms of natural language description. For instance, gender is a categorical/non-numerical variable has two groups -male & female. Quantitative data is a numerical measurements presented in terms of numbers. For instance, marks of the students, height and weight of patients, and the number of books in a library are some examples of quantitative data. Quantitative data are also called as information involving numbers and anything that is measurable.

Quantitative methods are research techniques which are highly used for tabulation or presentation of the quantitative data. The results of these methods are usually presented in terms of tables and graphs using statistics such as frequencies, percentages, measures of average, measures of dispersion and so on. The quantitative research design are of four types, namely Descriptive, Correlational, Causal-Comparative or Quasi-Experimental, and Experimental Research.

  • Descriptive research involves identifying the basic characteristic of the variables included in the dataset. For example, it involves a description of the habit of using tobacco by the college students.
  • Correlation research is used to examine the relationship between two or more variables given in the data. For example, one can determine the relationship between the number of hours studied and marks obtained in an particular exam.
  • Causal-Comparative or Quasi-Experimental research involves identifying the cause-effect relationships between the variables. It is used to examine the effect of one or more independent variables on the dependent /response variable. For example, the effect of gender on Statistics achievement can be examined by this research method.
  • Experimental Research, also called as a true experimentation, involves applying a methodology to determine the cause-effect relationship among a set of variables included in a study.
